Throughout 2016, over 5.4 million people passed through Riga, accounting for almost half of all traffic passing through the Baltic region. Following data release this past May, it seems the airport is keeping hold of this title and is continuing to grow in popularity! At Riga International Airport, 17 different carriers offer 89 destinations in the summer and 60 in the winter.

In May alone, over half a million passengers arrived at the Riga International Airport (this is a 10.8% increase compared to last year!). Since January, over 2.1 million passengers have passed through Riga – this is a 7.4% increase and already accounts for almost 40% of passengers served during 2016.

While Riga was the final destination for many travellers, over 600,000 passengers (28.3% of incoming passengers) chose the airport as a transfer hub during their travels to another destination since the beginning of this year. This figure is a 17.4% increase in transfer passengers compared to 2016. In May, over 150 thousand travellers (29.8%) were transfering flights, a 17.7% increase compared to this time last year.

Cargo volumes also increased 2% since last year, and 4% more aircrafts were served!

Ilona Līce, Chairwoman of the Board of Riga International Airport, is extremely excited about the recent data and is looking foward to the future. “More than half a million passengers per month means that an average of 600 people cross Airport security control each hour, which is 15 to 20 thousand passengers a day. For this reason, the Airport is working on solutions to speed up its customer service; for example, in the nearest future, security control lines will be extended so that passengers could prepare for the security screening more conveniently. At the same time, we are working intensively on the design of the new, spacious passenger terminal, the construction of which will start in 2019 and which is expected to be completed in five years at the same time as RailBaltic railway station.”
