On August 24th, the Danish Agriculture & Food Council hosted the first ever Nordic Food Awards “Embla” in Copenhagen in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment and Food’s “Better Food for More People”. Each national jury submitted nominations in seven different categories, the winners of which were decided by the Nordic jury. These awards were created in the hopes they will boost public interest surrounding Nordic food outside of the region.

Nina Sundqvist, Managing Director of the Norwegian Food Branding Foundation and New Nordic Food Steering Group chair stated, “The first Nordic Food Award marks an important milestone for New Nordic Food. The publicity will mean that so many more people in the Region will hear about good food and what it can achieve. The seven winners continue the Nordic food narrative, each in their own unique way.”

The Faroe Islands are included in those seven winners! They are extremely excited and looking foward to helping continue the Nordic Food narrative as well as their own cultural narrative on the global stage. The Faroe Islands were the big winners of the night, taking home 3 different awards – Nordic Food Artisan 2017 (Leif Sørensen), Nordic Food Destination 2017 (Heimablídni), Nordic Food Producer 2017 (Dímunargardur).

Following the awards, Mr. Sørensen explained, “Three winners in one evening is great. It’s important for Faroese self-confidence, but it also shows that we are capable of special things and are beginning to discover our identity.”

The awards will surely bring the much deserved attention to Nordic cuisine as well as the Faroe Islands.

Congratulations to all the winners!
